Honoring Veterans

Honoring Those Who Served

At Azle & Lake Worth Funeral Home & Cemetery, we hold deep respect for the men and women who served our country. It is our privilege to help families honor that service with dignity and gratitude.

Our experienced staff is here to support you through every step of planning a veteran’s funeral or memorial and subsequent burial. We will carefully assist with the required paperwork and guide you through the process of obtaining burial benefits and memorial items available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, helping ease the burden during a difficult time.

VA Burial Benefits and Memorial Items

VA burial benefits are intended to help eligible veterans and their families with funeral, burial and memorial expenses, including services at a VA national cemetery. The Department of Veterans Affairs also provides memorial items — such as headstones, markers and burial flags — to honor a veteran’s service and legacy.

Who May Be Eligible

Eligibility for burial in a VA national cemetery and related benefits may include:

  • Veterans who were not dishonorably discharged.
  • Service members who died while on active duty, active duty for training or inactive duty for training.
  • Spouses and minor children of eligible veterans.
  • In some cases, unmarried adult dependent children of veterans.

Military Funeral Honors and Committal Services

Military funeral honors are a powerful and meaningful way to recognize a veteran’s service. These honors may include the playing of “Taps,” a rifle detail, a color guard and the ceremonial folding and presentation of the American flag to the family.

Eligibility for military funeral honors and a burial flag may apply if the veteran:

  • Served during wartime.
  • Died while serving on active duty after May 27, 1941.
  • Served after Jan. 31, 1955.
  • Served during peacetime before June 27, 1950, and completed at least one enlistment or was discharged due to a service-related disability.
  • Served in the Selected Reserves or qualifying Philippine military forces in service to the United States.

Burial Benefits and How to Apply

VA burial benefits may help cover funeral, burial and transportation costs. For veterans buried in a national cemetery, benefits may also include the burial plot, interment and transportation of remains.

  • Claims for non-service-connected burial benefits must be filed within two years of burial or cremation
  • There is no time limit to file for service-connected burial, plot, or interment allowances.

Applications may be submitted online or by mail using the appropriate VA forms. The VA also provides headstones or markers for eligible veterans at no cost, including for unmarked graves.

For additional information, families may contact the VA directly at 1-800-827-1000 or visit the VA’s burial and memorial benefits website. Our staff  is always available to help guide you through these steps with care and clarity.
