Lucky Ewing DeLay
1938 - 2022
Lucky Ewing DeLay, age 83, of Millsap, Texas, passed away on August 26, 2022 in the arms of his loving wife, Lee, whom he shared over 50 years with. Over his 80 years, Lucky lived a storied life, spending years boxing, racing horses, running motocross tracks, and most importantly spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and beloved nieces and nephews.
Lucky grew up in Dallas, Texas, where he attended Sunset High School. Growing up with his 3 brothers and 2 sisters, he always had someone to adventure with. He enjoyed playing many sports, but quickly found a love for boxing, turning professional at the age of 15 and was a Dallas Golden Gloves champion.
He met Lee in 1969 at Dewey’s Feedstore in Irving, Texas, that he owned. Lucky found his way to the quarter horse racing world, where he and Lee shared many wonderful years, traveling around the United States and across Mexico with their sweet Julie. Racing was a family affair for the DeLay’s- from his niece Sussie, galloping horses, to what would be become his son-in-law, Donnie, training for him
Together Lee and Lucky had Krystal Luck and Lucky Ewing, Jr. They eventually settled down in Irving, Texas, raising their children. Lucky was extremely active in Irving youth sports, coaching Lucky’s football and baseball teams. He became coach and dad to many along the way. If there was one thing Lucky could do, it was to make those boys tough.
He was most proud watching his kids and grandkids doing what they loved most, whether that was watching Krystal in the marching band or reading through horse race programs for hours and betting on the best of best. He was sure to tell everyone about her Economics degree from University of North Texas- that he was so proud of. You could often find Lucky at any and all football practices, scrimmages and games for Lucky Jr. while as a player at MacArthur High School, Southern Methodist University, or as a coach. He was a proud fan of any team his children or grandchildren were apart of!
In 2003 Lee and Lucky headed west, purchasing land in Millsap, opening Lucky’s Landing MX Park. Most days he could be found driving his tractor, building new jumps, or spending time with riders. He knew most by name and loved to share stories with them.
Lucky was loyal and devoted to those he loved, sharing deep bonds with his nieces and nephews, who he always treated like his own children. He shared a very special bond with his nephew Cody Starek, that began at birth. Cody and his sister, Tammy, spent countless hours with Uncle Lucky and Aunt Lee.
In his final years, Lucky found himself again at little league and sports practices with his youngest grandchildren. Grandad instilled toughness in the most loving ways, spending much of his days playing in the dirt or wrestling with Baby Luck.
He leaves behind wife, Marilee DeLay; daughters, Julie Stewart (Donnie) and Krystal; son, Lucky (Alex); grandchildren, Natalie Yonce (Jason), Dana Reygadas (Jose Luis), Billy Stewart, Kenny Stewart, Riley DeLay, and his namesake, Lucky DeLay III; great-grandchildren, Billy and Brooke Yonce, Jose Luis, Landon, Camila, Phillip, Knox, and Penelope Reygadas; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Our family is grateful to know that his body is healed, and he resides in Heaven.
Services will be held at Willow Park Baptist Church (129 S. Ranch Rd, Aledo, TX) on Wednesday, September 7 at 10 AM, followed by Interment at Dobbs Valley Cemetery (734 Dobbs Valley Rd, Mineral Wells, TX) immediately following.
