With heavy hearts, the Nevers family regrets to announce the passing of our beloved George Nevers. We will deeply miss a sharp, dry sense of humor, warm heart, and generous spirit.
George Hedley Nevers was born October 14, 1932 to Stanley and Christiana Nevers in Alexandria, St. Ann, Jamaica. He was the eldest of seven siblings, Kenneth Nevers, Jenny Nevers, Joseph Nevers, Derrick Nevers, Brenton Nevers, Thelma Clark, and Frank Nevers. Mr. George Nevers was also the brother to three older siblings Cecil White, Evelyn White, and Lucille White.
Growing up, George went to Inverness primary school and Inverness high school. Once he completed, he went to trade school in Kingston, Jamaica, where George studied auto mechanic, and later practiced in the states. In 1961 George met his soon to be wife, Linnette Huie, in Harbor View, Jamaica. After being with each other for three years, they decided to tie the knot in 1964. They both had children from prior relationships, so together, they shared a beautiful, blended family of eight children, Sharon Nevers, Marcia Nevers, Lorna Barrett, Winsome Nevers, Owen Nevers, Michael Nevers, Lloyd Nevers, and Wayne Nevers. To follow his children, George also has one sister-in-law, four daughter-in-laws and two son-in-laws, and numerous grand and great-grandchildren.
How George got his infamous name “Pops”? It was a friend of Owen who came by his home; upon meeting him and his wife, he first named them “Mom and Pops.” Since then, everyone that came across his path has referred to him as “Pops.”
Pops lived a vegetarian life of almost 40 years. He was a man who took great pride in what he put into his body. Because of this, his family and close friends always looked to him for those special remedies. He was a person who loved to travel, entertain, plant fresh veggies in his garden, and enjoy a good conversation. Oh, and lets not forget, his hobbies were wrestling and politics. You were always guaranteed to get a laugh with Pops.
George is preceded in death with his parents, Stanley and Christiana Nevers; his brothers, Cecil White and Kenneth Nevers; sisters, Lucille White and Thelma Clark; and his eldest son, Owen Nevers.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Linnette Nevers, children, brothers, sister, in-laws, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends near and far. Pops will be greatly missed. We will continue to cherish every moment we were allowed to have with him on earth.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” Matthew 5:4.
