Billy Roy Carpenter Sr.
1937 - 2022
Billy Roy Carpenter, Sr. was born on June 13, 1937, in Midland, TX to Cecil Calvert Carpenter and Evelyn Malissa Bell. He died unexpectedly on Friday, May 20, 2022. He was the third of four children. Siblings Vernon, Janice and Gene. After graduating from Midland High School in 1955, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the pacific fleet. He attended Texas Tech before moving to Fort Worth, TX where he married his wife Doris Ann Bizzell in 1962. As a warrant officer in the U.S. Army, he served as helicopter pilot in Vietnam and an instructor pilot at Fort Walters. They had two sons, Billy Roy Carpenter, Jr. and Bradley Aaron Carpenter.
His passion was as a helicopter pilot, and he had the opportunity to pilot helicopters for many different companies throughout the early part of his career life. He managed an offshore helicopter company in the Gulf of Mexico. He was a financial manager for Offshore Logistics in Singapore. He flew for Channel 4 News in Phoenix. He also flew for AirEvac, and he was a private pilot for a construction company in Tucson. Also, while in Arizona he and his brother Vernon started a landscape and remodeling business.
He was in the first graduating class and was the first veteran to graduate from the University of Phoenix using the G.I. Bill. In 1984 he relocated his family to Texas where he worked for Lockheed Martin and retired after 25 years at the age of 74.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; his son’s, Billy (Sherrie) of Springtown, TX and Bradley (Shelly) of Olive Branch, MS. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and his siblings Vernon, Gene, Janice. He is preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of life will be held on May 31, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. and private ceremony at DFW National Cemetery at later date.
