Ben Steers Obituary

Ben Daniel Steers, 56, of Fort Worth, TX, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes at his home on Wednesday, May 27, 2020.

Ben was born on June 19, 1963 in Miller, South Dakota to Thomas Edward Steers and Shirley O’Brien Steers of Miller. Ben, the youngest of 6 children, was raised on the family ranch southwest of Miller. He graduated from Miller High School in 1981.

Ben graduated from Southeast Area Vo-Tech School in Sioux Falls, SD in Electronics in 1989. He worked for LodgeNet in Sioux Falls for a number of years which took him to many different cities in the US. He moved to Texas in the mid 90’s, where he met and married Rebecca Haynie on July 25, 1998. Rebecca had 3 young children when they married, and Ben loved them with all his heart and helped to raise them. Ben and Rebecca had two children together, Sara Cloe Steers (1999) and Theron Thomas Steers (2005). Their family was Ben’s greatest love and source of pride. Ben was working for OneSource Communications at the time of his death and had worked there 21 years.

Ben has struggled with a variety of health issues that started with a congenital defect that damaged both kidneys, resulting in the need for his first kidney transplant at age 14. Effects of his medications and his compromised immune system, caused a lifetime of health complications. Ben was a warrior through it all, and an inspiration to all his family and to those that knew him. His positive attitude and sense of humor are other traits Ben will be remembered for.

Ben is survived by his children, Sara and Theron; his mother, Shirley O’Brien Steers; siblings, Susan Andersen, Thomas (Barb) Steers; Nancy Steers-Beaird (Rolyn); Todd Steers; Bob (Diane) Steers; his step-children, Ivy Haynie and Chance Stouder; mother of his children, Rebecca Haynie; former parents-in-law, Ken and Nancy Haynie; and a host of other family members and friends. Ben is proceeded in death by his father, Thomas Edward Steers (2008); and Connor Micheal Stouder (2016).

A Celebration of Ben’s Life will be held in SD at a later date.
