On April 1st of 2023, the Star Wars community lost one of its brightest stars. Angie Mayhew, the beloved wife of Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca, passed away at the age of 69.

Though born in a small Texas town, Angie spent the second half of her life carrying the torch for the Star Wars fandom and spreading joy to fans worldwide. But before that, she owned her own antique and collectible toys business, touring the convention circuit, where she met Peter, the love of her life. Together, they traveled far and wide, leaving a trail of stardust, glitter, and happy memories wherever they went.

Angie was a shining example of kindness, dedication, and generosity, always going above and beyond to ensure fans felt appreciated and loved. She was one of the modern Star Wars convention and event trailblazers. She was an honorary member of the 501st and Rebel Legions, where her warmth, relatability, and bold, fun-loving attitude made her an instant favorite among fans.

Angie was also heavily involved in charity work through the 501st Legion and Charity and the Peter Mayhew Foundation, providing aid for those affected by crisis, disease, and disaster. All who knew and loved her will greatly miss her contributions to the Star Wars fandom and her and Peter’s shared impact on fans worldwide.

She is preceded in death by her husband Peter Mayhew, and mother and father Mary Lee and George Jones. Her legacy lives on through her three daughters Kathleen Long, Sheril Cigainero, and Katy Dehay, a granddaughter, and son-in-law Bradley Long, along with her two sisters, Kristy and Tom Turner and Melanie and Hershel Guinn, three nephews Brian, Bradley, and Justin Pierce and large extended family, as well as the countless friends, "bonus" children, and Star Wars fandom family members she adopted along the way—all of whom she loved and cherished deeply. 

A private funeral for friends and family will be held on Tuesday, April 11th at 1 pm at the Azleland Funeral Home, with a Celebration of Life Memorial to follow at a later date where we can raise a glass to Angie Mayhew and all the joy she brought into the galaxy!
