In Loving Memory of Johnny Clinton Metsgar
February 25, 1947 – March 29, 2025

With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Johnny Clinton Metsgar, a man whose life was a testament to love, devotion, and unwavering dedication to his family and faith. Johnny departed this world on March 29, 2025, in Fort Worth, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and boundless love.

Johnny was born on February 25, 1947, in the small yet vibrant town of Spur, Texas, to his loving parents, Walter Clinton Metsgar and Pansy Mayme Drennen-Metsgar. He was raised in a close-knit family, surrounded by the warmth and companionship of his beloved siblings. His childhood in Spur was filled with the simple joys of small-town life—riding bikes through dusty streets, attending Spur High School, and forging lifelong friendships that stood the test of time.  Johnny was an active participant in the community well being by volunteering for the Spur fire department as well as helping his beloved community in every way that he could.

But it was in 1967, on a fateful evening in Spur, that Johnny's life changed forever. Destiny had a hand in bringing him together with the love of his life, Vivian Rose McCarty. She and a friend were cruising Main Street when they spotted Johnny in a parking lot. Without hesitation, they picked him up and placed him in the backseat of their car. In what could only be described as love at first sight, Vivian soon climbed over the front seat to sit beside him in the back, and from that moment forward, their hearts were bound together for a lifetime. Their love story was one of devotion, laughter, and an unbreakable bond. They married on June 7, 1969, and built a life rich in love, faith, and family.

Johnny was a man of many talents and an incredible work ethic. After high school, he pursued his passion for mechanics and earned an associate degree in HVAC. This led to a fulfilling career in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industry. His skills and dedication made him a respected figure in his field, with notable tenures at Texas Tech University and, later, at the Lubbock State School, where he proudly served as their HVAC specialist until his well-earned retirement.

Though his career was important, nothing meant more to Johnny than his family. He and Vivian welcomed their first son, Clint, in 1973, followed by his younger brother, Corey in 1980, a moment that solidified his purpose in life—to be the best father he could be. Johnny was not just a father but a mentor, a protector, and a guiding light for his children. He was actively involved in every aspect of their lives, from school events to their years in FFA, where he proudly supported them as they raised and showed pigs and poultry. Johnny proudly watched and mentored Corey as he went up through the Boy Scouts ranks to earn his Eagle Scout badge. He was their greatest champion, always present, always encouraging, and always leading by example.

Johnny had a deep love for adventure, especially when it came to motorcycles and dirt bikes. He was an avid Harley-Davidson rider and spent countless hours riding dirt bikes with his sons and his close friend, Kent Vineyard. Some of their most cherished memories were made at Roaring Springs, where they would camp, fish, and cool off in the waterfalls and creek. These were not just weekend getaways but sacred moments where laughter echoed through the trees and bonds were strengthened.

Beyond his family and career, Johnny had a heart for service. He was an active member of the Lions Club, giving back to his community whenever he could. His faith was the cornerstone of his life. After marrying Vivian, he was baptized into the Baptist faith, often crediting her for helping him grow closer to the Lord. He remained steadfast in his beliefs and instilled the same values in his children, raising them to walk in faith and attend church regularly.

Another great love of Johnny's life was his pets. He had a deep affection for animals, particularly Boston Terrier bulldogs, though his last beloved companion, Peanut, held an especially dear place in his heart. So strong was their bond that Johnny hesitated to go to the hospital, worried about leaving Peanut behind. His love for animals was a reflection of his gentle and compassionate nature—a man whose heart had room for all creatures, big and small.

Johnny was a man of unwavering devotion, not only to his family but also to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, humor, and generosity left an indelible mark on this world. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched, in the laughter of his grandchildren, and in the stories that will be told for generations.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Vivian Rose McCarty-Metsgar, who stood by his side through every joy and every challenge. He leaves behind his cherished sons, Clint Shannon Metsgar and his wife Cynthia, and Corey Layne Metsgar and his wife Christine. His legacy continues through his adored grandchildren: Colton, Cooper, Connor, Catelyn, and Claire, each of whom he loved beyond measure. He is also survived by his beloved brother, Ronnie Metsgar, and his wife Trisha; his brother-in-law, Kenneth Young; and his sister-in-law, Dolores Adcock, and her husband Mike. He also leaves behind numerous extended family members and friends who will forever hold him close in their hearts.

Johnny was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Walter and Pansy Metsgar, and his dear sister, Carolyn McClanahan.

A celebration of Johnny's life will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025, at the Azle Funeral Chapel, located on the serene grounds of Azleland Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM, followed by a heartfelt service at 10:00 AM, where family and friends will gather to honor the remarkable man he was. A graveside committal will follow at Azleland Cemetery, where Johnny will be laid to rest in the presence of those who loved him most.

Though the world feels a little dimmer without Johnny in it, his light continues to shine in the hearts of those he left behind. His was a life well-lived, filled with love, laughter, and faith. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, a friend, and above all, a man of integrity and love. Rest well, Johnny—your work here is done, but your love will never fade.
