John Frank McCune, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 7, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas, where he had been a cherished resident of the Azle area. He was 74 years old.
Born on January 31, 1950, in Salt Lake City, Utah, John was the son of Frank McCune and Catherine Clark McCune. His early years were spent across various parts of New Mexico, where he developed a profound sense of family and community. After graduating from Mayfield High School in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in 1968, John embarked on a journey that would define his life with commitment and distinction.
In 1967, John met Rebecca, the love of his life, at high school. Their relationship blossomed into a lifelong bond, culminating in their marriage in 1968. John's unwavering dedication to Rebecca and their family was a cornerstone of his life, and their love story was one of enduring partnership and mutual respect.
John joined the United States Army in 1970, where he served with honor in the airborne infantry. His military career was distinguished by his service as a Vietnam War veteran and a posting in Panama during the conflict. During his 28 years of service, John made significant contributions in hospital logistics and medical engineering, roles he excelled in while serving in the Army. His military career culminated in his retirement as a Chief Warrant Officer 4, a testament to his dedication and leadership.
In addition to his military service, John was committed to lifelong learning and personal growth. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Business from Wayland Baptist University in 1984 and later obtained a Master's degree, reflecting his dedication to professional and academic excellence.
John's athletic prowess was evident in the 1980s when he became the U.S. Army racquetball champion. His competitive spirit and skill earned him numerous trophies and accolades. His passion for sports extended to golf, where he celebrated a memorable hole-in-one and embraced the game with enthusiasm and dedication.
John was known for his commanding presence and authoritative demeanor, which often initially intimidated those he met. However, his imposing stature was quickly softened by his warmth and humility. Once he spoke, his genuine kindness, humor, and respectful nature won over everyone, revealing a man of extraordinary character and heart.
John's commitment to his family was profound and unwavering. He was not only a loving husband and father but also a confidant, mentor, and best friend to his daughters, Stacy Malone and Katheryn McCune-Breakfield. His role extended beyond traditional parenting; he was deeply involved in their lives, offering guidance, support, and boundless love.His devotion was so great that he was joyed to have been able to take on the role of not only a grandfather but also the role of a father mentor with the same love and affection he gave to his own children.
John's love and inclusivity extended to his in-laws and all who entered his life. He treated everyone as part of his immediate family, embodying a spirit of warmth and acceptance. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were central to his life, and he took immense pride in being actively involved in their lives, nurturing them with the same dedication that characterized his role as a father.
An avid animal lover, John had a special fondness for his Rottweilers. He found joy in the great outdoors, whether fishing or taking long walks. His storytelling and sense of humor were legendary, making him a larger-than-life figure whose presence was deeply felt by all who knew him.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Rebecca McCune; his daughters, Stacy Malone and her husband Marc, and Katheryn McCune-Breakfield and her husband Michael; and his grandchildren, Kourtney Debenedetto and her husband Jason, Jessica Menefee and her husband Matthew, Tyler Malone, Nathaniel McCune, Delayne McCune, KayLynda McCune, and MyKayla Riley and her husband Luis. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, his brothers Robert and Donald McCune, and many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Catherine McCune, and his sisters Joan Laumbach, Deloris Heathman, and Sharron Johnson.
The family would like to give special thanks to Patricia Waggoner who graciously donated half of her liver to John. This allowed John to continue the last of his life for another nine and a half years. The family is so gracious to the self-sacrifice she made to the McCune's.
A funeral service to celebrate John's life and achievements will be held on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.
John Frank McCune's life was a testament to love, dedication, and an imposing yet gentle presence that left a lasting impression. His legacy of service, family devotion, and exceptional character will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
