Joan C. Zwald

1930 - 2022

Joan Cadwallader Zwald fell asleep in the Lord, October 16, 2022.  She lived 92 years, enjoying life and always thankful to the Lord to wake up to a new day.
Joan was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Texas upon marrying her husband, Fred A. Zwald Jr. Together, they loved to travel, camp, and spend time on lakes and rivers in several boats Fred built. After completing a Coast Guard course, Navigator Joan and Pilot Fred traveled a total of 2,646 river miles, passing through 43 locks on various rivers, in three different voyages. The longest trip started in Alabama, ending in their home town of Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. After Fred's passing, Joan continued to travel with friends and family.
She loved her family. Her grandchildren, to this day, share memories of the travel adventure from Texas to Pennsylvania she and Granddad took them on in their camper van. Five grandchildren, twelve to four years old, it was the trip of a lifetime!
The last six years her home was Avalon Memory Care in Fort Worth. The family is forever grateful for the kind, compassionate, care provided for her over those years by the staff at Avalon. We are thankful she was able to live her life out there in her last days under the care of Allstar hospice, who along with the Avalon staff, provided excellent care for her. Thank you all.
She has been reunited with her beloved husband, Fred Zwald Jr., and her two son-in-laws, Clarence Duncan and Randy Abernathy in God's Eternal Kingdom.
Joan will be deeply and lovingly missed by her four children, Fred A. Zwald III, Karen Duncan, Debbie Abernathy, and Cathy Warren and husband, Gayland; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Joan was a woman of faith, with hope and trust in the Lord, living every day in gratitude. Donations in her memory may be directed toward St. Peter Orthodox Church, 7601 Bellaire Dr. S., Fort Worth, Texas 76132.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at St. Peters Antiochian Orthodox Church beginning at 10:00 AM. followed by interment at Azleland Cemetery.
