Obituary

Forrest Ray Byas, known fondly as Ray, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2024, at his home in Springtown, Texas, surrounded by the family he cherished above all else. Born in Oklahoma, to Fredrick Oliver Byas and Zula Mae Hammond-Byas, Ray was a man whose life was defined by unwavering dedication to his family, his faith, and his country.

Ray spent his formative years in Amarillo, Texas, where he developed the values and strength of character that would guide him throughout his life. In 1957, driven by a deep sense of duty and patriotism, he enlisted in the United States Army, beginning a distinguished military career that would span decades. As an artillery specialist and later a supply sergeant major, Ray served his country with honor, most notably during the Vietnam War. His time in the military was a source of immense pride for Ray, and he retired as a highly respected veteran, holding the memories of his service close to his heart.

It was during his time stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama, that Ray met the love of his life, Patricia A. Howell. Their meeting was the beginning of a beautiful love story, and they were married in the same place where they had first crossed paths. Together, Ray and Pat built a life filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to each other. Their bond was a testament to the power of love and companionship, and their home was a sanctuary of warmth and joy.

Ray was a man of deep faith, having been baptized in the Baptist Church as a child. His relationship with the Lord was a cornerstone of his life, and his devotion to his faith was evident to all who knew him. Pat often lovingly recalled how Ray would spontaneously break into song, singing Christian melodies that brought joy and peace to those around him. Whether sitting on the front porch swing or simply passing the time, Ray's heart was always filled with the love of his Lord, and his voice was a beautiful reflection of that devotion.

Intensely good and deeply kind, Ray was a man who lived for his family. His love for them was boundless, and he found great joy in every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was the very heart of his family, a source of wisdom, strength, and unconditional love. Ray was a man of great intelligence, with a love for reading that kept his mind sharp and curious throughout his life. He was also a lover of the great outdoors, finding peace and happiness in activities such as fishing, camping, and boating. One of Ray's more endearing qualities was his passion for mowing the lawn—a simple task that brought him immense satisfaction. Even in his final days, he fondly remarked on how much he loved riding his lawnmower, a symbol of the quiet contentment he found in life's everyday pleasures.

Ray was also a fervent Dallas Cowboys fan, his loyalty to the team unwavering through every season. In his younger years, he had a passion for motorcycles, and he and his family would often embark on adventures, exploring new places and creating cherished memories together. Ray's life was one of rich experiences and deep connections, and he will be remembered for the joy he brought to those who knew him.

Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Pat Byas; his daughter, Deborah Burke, and her husband Steve; his son, Tony Byas, and his wife Janet; his five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a multitude of extended family and friends who will forever hold his memory dear. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick Oliver Byas and Zula Mae Hammond-Byas, as well as his siblings: Mamie Melton, Virginia Pierce, Elizabeth Harris, and Jerry Byas.

A visitation and funeral service to honor Ray's life will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2024, beginning at 8:30 AM at the Azle Funeral Chapel, located on the grounds of Azleland Cemetery in Azle, Texas. Ray will be laid to rest with full military honors in a private ceremony at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, a fitting tribute to a man who served his country with such distinction.

Ray Byas was a man of deep faith, unwavering loyalty, and boundless love. His legacy is one of service, kindness, and devotion to those he held dear. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
