In Loving Memory of Bertha Larraine Dockery
1947 - 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bertha Larraine Dockery, 76, of Fort Worth, Texas, on November 13, 2024. Bertha was born on November 27, 1947, in Phoenix, Arizona, to Weldon Miller and Bertha Sprueill. Raised in Oklahoma, she later made Texas her home, where she lived a full and vibrant life, deeply rooted in her faith and her love for family and friends.
Bertha's relationship with Jesus Christ was at the core of her being, and she carried that faith with her every day of her life. She was a strong Pentecostal, she lived her life with a kind heart, a giving spirit, and a devotion to those she loved. Bertha's generosity knew no bounds—she never met a stranger, and if you belonged to her, you were family, no questions asked.
In 1987, Bertha met Gary Dockery, the love of her life, when he played in a band at the bar where she worked as a bartender. It was his rendition of Waylon Jennings that captured her heart, and their whirlwind romance led them to marry in 1989. Gary was truly the love of Bertha's life, and they shared countless beautiful memories together before his passing.
Bertha was a woman of bold character and an unfiltered sense of humor. She was the best "Momma" anyone could ask for, always there with a listening ear and, when needed, the most honest (and sometimes unsolicited) advice. Her family, her friends, and anyone who knew her could count on her to speak the truth with love, wisdom, and warmth.
An avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys for more than 60 years, Bertha could always be found cheering on her team. She was also an enthusiastic regular at the Winstar Casino, where the slot machines brought her a sense of joy and excitement. Her cooking was legendary, especially her infamous Pineapple Upside-Down Cake, a treat that delighted her family and friends alike.
Bertha's love extended beyond her immediate family—she embraced everyone with open arms, welcoming anyone's children as her own. She was a constant source of comfort, laughter, and support to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
She is survived by her daughter, Coralee Hillery; her son, John Hillery Jr. and his wife, LeeAnn Hillery; her Niece Tammy Cunningham; her son, Ricky Dockery and his wife Marlene; her grandchildren, Justin, Jordan, Dakota, Quwana, Andi; and her seven great-grandchildren. Bertha is also survived by her sister, Hazel; her brothers, Clarence, Jerry, and Jackie; as well as numerous extended family members and close friends.
Bertha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gary Dockery; her parents, Weldon Miller and Bertha Sprueill; and her siblings, Mary, Barbara, George, Roy, and Dickie.
While she will be dearly missed by all who knew her, Bertha's spirit will live on in the many lives she touched with her love, kindness, and unshakable faith. A visitation will be held November 18 @ 1:00 PM at Azle & Lake Worth Funeral Home Chapel. Her funeral service will be held beginning @ 2:00 PM with Azle & Lake Worth Funeral Home. After her chapel service, her Interment will commence on the grounds of Azleland Cemetery & Memorial Park located behind the funeral home.
Rest in peace, Bertha. You will forever be loved and missed.
