Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Belynda Jane Downing, a remarkable woman whose legacy of love, strength, and unwavering faith will be cherished by all who knew her. Belynda was born on July 10, 1959, in Belton, Texas, and passed away on July 29, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas. She was the beloved daughter of Wanda Joyce Huber-Haning, who preceded her in death.

Belynda spent her formative years in the Azle area of Texas, where she cultivated lifelong friendships and built the foundation of her resilient spirit. She graduated from Springtown High School with grace and determination, later furthering her education at Tarrant County Junior College, where she earned her degree.

Her life journey took her through the vibrant community of River Oaks before she returned to the serene shores of Eagle Mountain Lake near Azle. Known for her indomitable spirit and meticulous nature, Belynda was a woman who knew how to get things done the right way—the correct way. Her love for God was evident in her daily life, but it was her family that she truly cherished.

Belynda was fortunate to have experienced profound love twice in her life. She married the love of her life, Leslie Earl Smith III, on March 26, 1979. Their union was filled with love and companionship until Leslie's passing in February 2001. Belynda's heart found solace and companionship once more with Bennett Downing, with whom she shared cherished memories and a loving life.

As a mother, Belynda was unparalleled. She raised her son, Lee Edward Smith, with unwavering love and devotion, instilling in him the values of strength and integrity. Together, they were often described as "two peas in a pod." Belynda ensured that Lee never wanted for anything, always providing for him with care and dedication. Her role as a mother extended to being a terrific grandmother to her cherished grandchildren, Madison, Tori, and Cooper. Her love for them was boundless, and she treasured every moment spent with them.

Belynda's talents were many. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as drawing and coloring, and she had a particular fondness for crossword puzzles. Her sharp mind and firm will were admired by all who knew her. Belynda had an innate sense of right and wrong, and before illness touched her life, she was always the first to lend a helping hand to those in need. She was a fighter and a survivor, embodying resilience and grace.

Belynda is survived by her devoted husband, Bennett Downing; her beloved son, Lee Edward Smith, and his wife, Darla; her treasured grandchildren, Madison, Tori, and Cooper; and her dear sister, Pam Willy. She was preceded in death by her mother, Wanda Joyce Huber-Haning; her first husband, Leslie Earl Smith III; her sister, Sharion Walls; and her brother, Michael Squyres.

A graveside service will be held to honor Belynda's memory on August 9, 2024, at 10 AM at Azleland Cemetery in Azle, Texas. All who knew and loved her are welcome to attend as we celebrate the life of a woman whose spirit will forever remain in our hearts.

Belynda Jane Downing's life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and family. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with those she loved, and forever in the presence of the Lord.
